Ansu Fati receives Lionel Messi’s No. 10 shirt from Barcelona.
Following the departure of star scorer Lionel Messi, Barcelona confirmed Wednesday that Ansu Fati will be the next player to wear the historic No. 10 jersey.
“After wearing the No. 22 and then the No. 17, the young Barca striker will proudly wear the No. 10 shirt – a famous number worn by luminaries like as Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo,” Barcelona stated in a statement.
Last month, Messi agreed to a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain of the French Ligue 1. In his previous 17 seasons with Barcelona in Spain’s La Liga, he scored 672 goals. In 2008, he inherited the number 10 from fellow Barcelona star Ronaldinho.
Due to La Liga rules, which require each club’s 25 first-team players to wear shirt Nos. 1 through 25, Barcelona was unable to retire Messi’s number.
On Sunday in Reims, France, Messi made his PSG debut wearing No. 30. In the 2-0 win, he did not take a single shot.
In 2019, Fati joined Barcelona’s first team. When he scored against Osasuna in his first season, he became the club’s youngest La Liga scorer (16).
With a goal against Ukraine at the age of 17, he became the youngest goal scorer in the history of Spain’s national team.

Fati’s last appearance for Barcelona was in November. He missed the first half of the season due to a knee injury, but returned to training at the end of August. In his previous 41 games for Barcelona, Fati had scored 13 goals.
Barcelona takes on Bayern Munich in the 2021-22 Champions League group stage on Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. EDT at Camp Nou in Barcelona.
