Mario will be played by Chris Pratt, and the rest of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ voice cast has been revealed.
Chris Pratt will lead the voice cast of an animated Super Mario Bros. film from Illumination, Universal Pictures announced Thursday. Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan Michael-Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, and others also appear in the film.
In the Nintendo video games, Pratt will play Mario, the plumber who must save Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) from the Koopa Kingdom. Luigi, Mario’s brother, is played by Day.
Bowser, the game’s main antagonist, will be played by Black. Toad, a mushroom person who is one of Mario’s buddies, is voiced by Key.
Mario debuted as the protagonist of the Donkey Kong video game. Mario made a comeback in Donkey Kong, Jr. as the villain.
Mario and Luigi had their own game, Mario Bros., in which they used pipes to destroy turtles and crabs. Super Mario Brothers was a side-scrolling platform game that started a video game brand that grew with each new Nintendo console.
Donkey Kong, who will be voiced by Seth Rogen, will also appear in the film. Cranky Kong, Kong’s grandfather, is played by Armisen and appears in later game sequels.
In 1993, a live-action Super Mario Bros. film was released. Mario and Luigi were played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, respectively, with Dennis Hopper as the villain.
The film was a box office flop, and aficionados of the game panned it for being mostly untrustworthy. The animated Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, and Secret Life of Pets series are all produced by Illumination.
Super Mario Bros. will be released in 2022 during the holiday season by Universal.
