RB Christian McCaffrey will be out for a few weeks, according to Panthers coach Matt Rhule.

The hamstring injury suffered by Carolina Panthers standout running back Christian McCaffrey during Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans likely keep him out for at least a few weeks.

McCaffrey has a strained hamstring, according to Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, but the Pro Bowl tailback is still undergoing tests to evaluate the severity of the ailment. While those tests are being completed, Rhule hasn’t ruled out putting McCaffrey on injured reserve.

“They’re still performing a lot of diagnostic testing,” Rhule explained, “so I can’t tell you if it’ll be one, two, three, or four weeks.”

On a first-down carry from the Texans’ 14-yard line, McCaffrey was injured while sprinting to the left sideline. He avoided a Texans defender with a stutter step and instantly indicated to the Panthers’ sideline after the play was done.

McCaffrey walked off the field and spent more than 20 minutes in the blue medical tent before making his way to the Panthers’ locker room on his own.

McCaffrey was then ruled out for the remainder of the Thursday Night Football game by the Panthers.

The game against the Texans was finished by rookie tailback Chuba Hubbard and veteran Royce Freeman. Hubbard had 11 rushes for 52 yards and three receptions for 27 yards as the projected starter until McCaffrey recovers, while Freeman had five carries for 17 yards.

Jaycee Horn, a first-round draft pick, will be out for a long time after breaking three bones in his right foot during Thursday’s game against Houston.

The Panthers cornerback and his family are currently debating whether surgery is required or whether the injury should be allowed to heal on its own.

“It crushes my heart to see these guys work so hard and get hurt,” Rhule said, adding that Horn could end up on injured reserve.

In Week 4 of the 2021 NFL season, the Panthers, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2015, will face the Dallas Cowboys.
