The United States dominates Europe to win the Ryder Cup.

No. 3 in the world Collin Morikawa tied for 14th place. On Sunday at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wis., Viktor Hovland of Norway won the fifth of a dozen singles golf matches to give the Americans the Ryder Cup title.

The Americans won 19-9, setting a new record for most points in a competition since 1979.

Morikawa told NBC, “It means so lot.” “Viktor was a fantastic opponent. It feels great to clinch this and bring the Cup back to the United States.

“We knew we had a good team with a lot of top-10 guys, but none of that matters until you hit the first tee shot.”

When Morikawa, 24, picked up his ball off the 18th green, fans lined the fairway and chanted “USA!”

Morikawa and Hovland each earned a half-point in the match by winning seven holes and tying the other five. The half-point was enough for the Americans to win the Cup with 14.5 points.

In the final round, Morikawa, the 2021 British Open champion, had six birdies.

The Americans have only won the Ryder Cup three times in the last two decades. The biannual tournament pits a dozen European players against a dozen Americans.

On the par-71 course, the 43rd Ryder Cup featured four-ball, foursome, and singles play.

No. 2 The Americans were led by Dustin Johnson in terms of victories. He became only the fifth player in Ryder Cup history to go undefeated.

The Americans took a 6-2 lead after the opening day of competition on the Straits Course on Friday. They increased their lead to 11-5 on Saturday, falling just short of the 14.5 points needed to win the championship.

No. 15 In the first match on Sunday, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy defeated No. 5 Xander Schauffele. Team Europe’s three-point victory cut the gap to five points.

Ireland’s No. 42 Shane Lowry and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay teed off second. Third was teed off by No. 21 Scottie Scheffler and No. 1 Jon Rahm of Spain.

For the Americans’ 12th point, Scheffler defeated Rahm 4 and 3. Cantlay defeated Lowry 4-2 to bring Team USA within 1.5 points of a win.

Cantlay said, “I woke up this morning telling the lads, let’s get to 20 points.” Article Summary from Nokia News
