Wilt Chamberlain was one of the most feared players in NBA history, averaging 30 points per game. 1 point out of a possible 22. In his career, he has averaged 9 rebounds per game. Despite the fact that Chamberlain was a nightmare to defend for opposing teams, there was one player who never shied away from a challenge. Wes Unseld, a former Washington Bullets center, was the player in question.
Julius Erving recalled attempting to dunk over Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes during a recent appearance on “The Knuckleheads” podcast. “I’m going in the lane, and that damn Wes Unseld was back there helping, and Elvin [Hayes],” Erving said via ClutchPoints “I had a feeling Unseld would hurt you and not blink. He’d sap the courage of your team’s other players, who wouldn’t even come out to your aid. They might not even come pick you up because he’ll hit them as well. ”
After reliving that memory, Dr. J stated that Unseld was the only player in the NBA who Chamberlain was “afraid of.”
“So he was the only guy in the league who Wilt [Chamberlain] was afraid of, and I always heard that before I got over to the league,” Erving told Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles.
