Cristiano Ronaldo scored in stoppage time to lift Manchester United to a thrilling Champions League group stage victory over Villarreal. Barcelona is now 0-2 in the major soccer tournament’s group round.
In the Red Devils’ 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, Ronaldo scored a crucial goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
By appearing in his 182nd Champions League match, Ronaldo, 36, set a new record for most appearances by a player in the competition’s history.
“Unbelievable! Another magnificent chapter has begun, and I’m overjoyed to have scored the game-winning goal and to have done so in such a lovely manner,” Ronaldo said on the team’s website.
“To have made the most appearances in history and to have scored a goal. It was a fantastic evening. I must stress the team’s mindset, which is the most significant [factor].”
In the first half of the Group F encounter, neither team scored. Paco Alcacer of Villarreal scored the game’s first goal in the 53rd minute.
During that phase, fellow forward Arnaut Danjuma received a through ball on the left side of the box. After that, he smashed a cross into the goal.
For a 1-0 lead, Alcacer slid into the area and deflected the feed through the legs of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
In the 60th minute, Manchester United’s left defender Alex Telles equalized. Bruno Fernandez, a center midfielder, scored on a free kick from outside the right side of the area. He made it to the top of the box with a chipped attempt.
Telles stood in the area, waiting for the ball to come to rest. He volleyed a strong volley into the right side of the net with his first touch.
Despite several close chances for a game-winning goal, the score remained level for the following 30 minutes. The decisive blow was delivered by Ronaldo, who gave his Red Devils the victory.
Jesse Lingard, a midfielder, was found in front of the net after Ronaldo headed down a feed inside the box. Lingard’s next touch, right before collapsing, was to tap the ball back to Ronaldo.
The star striker fired a shot that deflected off the left hand of Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and into the net.
