Prior to the Hawks game, Sixers’ Simmons was seen at a shootaround.
On Saturday night, the Philadelphia 76ers hosted the Atlanta Hawks in a rematch. That’s the same Hawks club that eliminated the Sixers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals last season with a Game 7 victory.
A familiar person was observed at Philly’s pre-game shootaround in the hours leading up to tip-off; one who made headlines during the aforementioned playoff debacle. Ben Simmons, the errant floor general.
On the morning of the game, Sixers Wire’s Ky Carlin tweeted a photo of Simmons pedaling an exercise bike at the team’s practice facility.
Simmons has been listed out for numerous games due to personal circumstances, and his return isn’t expected any time soon. However, the fact that he has returned to Sixers practices is likely a step in the right direction for his return to the floor.
Simmons is no stranger to the team.
This isn’t the first time Simmons has been at shootaround, as Doc Rivers pointed out on Thursday. Since clearing the air with the Sixers last week, the former No. 1 overall choice and three-time All-Star has been working, according to the coach. Furthermore, he believes Simmons is on the right track.
Rivers stated, “He’s good.” “He’s been exercising. He went at shootaround on Thursday and did a lot of shooting and stuff with Spencer [Rivers]. So, there you have it. I’m not sure [how many days he’s been working out]. I haven’t gone back there in a long time. But he’s been coming in every day that I’m aware of, but I can’t guarantee it — he’s been there the previous three days.”
Rivers was asked how the decision on Simmons’ return to play will be made before of the Hawks game. His remark seemed to imply that he will delegate that responsibility to others for the time being.
He told Dei Lynam, “My job is to coach the boys who are here and then believe that the people who are on the team will play someday.” “You know, as a coach, that’s all I have to be. So I don’t get caught up in all the nonsense — or clutter, as we may call it.”
Rivers, on the other hand, made a more forceful declaration about who would make the final decision.
“I believe it will be a collective choice.”
