Report: The Raiders Surprisingly Release Veteran Quarterback:

The NFL trade deadline has gone, and the Raiders have elected to remain in Las Vegas. Marcus Mariota, the team’s backup quarterback, could have been one of the team’s most valuable assets if he had been traded to a team in need of quarterbacks, but he was not. With Derek Carr’s durability and Mariota’s return to health, the Raiders have decided that having only two quarterbacks on the active roster is the best option.

Nathan Peterman, the team’s third-string quarterback, was released, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Peterman has been with the squad for three seasons, so this move comes as a bit of a shock. He was, however, unmistakably one of Jon Gruden’s men. The new brass may not have seen the utility in retaining Peterman around now that he is no longer with the squad. In the preseason, he played practically every quarterback action for the Raiders, and he even took over for an injured Carr against the Chicago Bears in Week 5. Despite his previous experience with the team, Las Vegas has elected to stick with Carr and Mariota.

What Will Happen to Peterman?

It’s possible that the choice to move on from Peterman will be temporary. It’s not out of the question that he’ll end up back on the Raiders’ practice squad in the near future. Because of Mariota’s injury issues this season, he’s highly familiar with the system and might be useful as a backup.

If Peterman isn’t going back to the practice squad, he shouldn’t have too much trouble finding work. He threw three touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first two seasons in the NFL. When he was with the Buffalo Bills, he was one of the league’s worst quarterbacks. That was, though, more than two seasons ago. Under the Raiders, he’s been learning and growing. He’s not ready to start now, but he’s been in a strong system where quarterbacks can learn. Peterman should be considered by a team in need of a quarterback.
