It’s difficult to fathom the Golden State Warriors at their height with even more shooting than the most dangerous backcourt ever assembled already supplied, but it’s a possible other reality.

J.J. Redick, a three-point specialist who retired from basketball in September after a 15-year career, spoke at an ESPN press conference on Sunday, October 31 after the global leader announced the former guard had been appointed as an NBA commentator. Redick, who has been a podcaster for Bill Simmons’ Ringer network for numerous years, isn’t afraid to speak his mind. And on Sunday, he made some intriguing “what if” remarks about missed possibilities to play for the Warriors and with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

When asked if there was ever a team that he contemplated during his playing days and thought, “…man, this team could win it all if they ever had a player like me spacing the floor,” Redick replied, “…man, this team could win it all if they ever had a player like me spacing the floor.” Before even sitting down at the microphone, he reacted as if he’d read a transcript of the questions he’d be asked.

“Definitely the Warriors,” Redick stated. “The Warriors,” as they’re known.

In Golden State, Redick would have completed the nightmare trio of shooters.

When asked for more information on which Warriors squad he preferred, Redick went into detail, outlining the complexities of how a team with several shooters can lead the league in open looks despite only having one ball and one guy who can toss it up every possession.

“So I came upon this fascinating statistic. “For about three years, Steph and Klay were the two guys in the NBA who had the most wide-open threes,” Redick said. “It may seem counterintuitive, but the more shooting you have on the field, particularly if you have excellent shooters, the better looks you’ll receive.”

“So, bringing me in as a shooting specialist doesn’t necessarily guarantee I’ll get open looks,” she says. For other guys, it could mean greater space.
