Kamaru Usman has devised a strategy to demonstrate that he is the pound-for-pound king.
Kamaru Usman, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, is the promotion’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, and he’s gearing up for a showdown with boxing’s No. 1, Canelo Alvarez.
On November 6, 2021, Canelo will fight Caleb Plant for all four major super-middleweight belts. Usman will defend his 170-pound title against No. 1-ranked contender Colby Covington at UFC 268 on the same night.
Both Canelo and “The Nigerian Nightmare” have only one loss on their records and are at the pinnacle of their respective careers. Usman also expressed interest in boxing Canelo during the UFC 268 media day. A victory over the Mexican in a boxing ring would solidify Usman’s status as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
“When was the last time we saw a pound-for-pound mixed martial artist go up against a pound-for-pound boxer, both in their prime, not when they’re older or retired and you’re trying to bring them back?” “They’re both at the top of their game,” Usman remarked. ‘That’s exactly what I want to accomplish.’ That is something that terrifies me and motivates me to get out of bed in the morning. That’s something for which I’d be willing to leave my daughter for another 12 weeks. We’ll have to wait and see. That’s something I’m considering. And if, God willing, we finish what we need to finish this Saturday, why not?”
Usman, who is confident in his ability to defeat Covington on Saturday night, has stated that he intends to pursue a boxing battle with Canelo following UFC 268. Usman said he’ll work with UFC president Dana White, the “pound-for-pound promoter,” to make it happen.
