Philly Legacy: Eagles Star Responds to ‘Aggressive’ Trade Rumors
Despite trade rumors, Fletcher Cox will continue to anchor Jonathan Gannon’s defense in the trenches. The Philadelphia Eagles tried to trade their All-Pro defensive lineman before the deadline, but “too many impediments” got in the way. Cox isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Prior to the 4 p.m. deadline, the former 12th overall pick confirmed the non-move on Instagram. He said it with two incredible words: “Forever Philly” – and numerous teammates (including Lane Johnson and Brandon Graham) wished him well. Cox is a club captain and a seasoned veteran who has 55.5 sacks in 148 career games to rank fifth on the franchise’s all-time sack list. He’s also reported to be a go-to guy for the front office when it comes to personnel and coaching choices.
The issue with trading Cox comes down to his non-transferable contract. In the last four years, the Eagles have restructured it three times, the most recent being a $14 million conversion two months ago (via Spotrac). Cox’s initial six-year, $102.6 million contract has a staggering $26.5 million cap impact, including $24.2 million in dead cap. Ouch.
Regarding Fletcher Cox and the prospect of a trade, it would be quite shocking from a financial sense. In a conversion a few weeks ago, the #Eagles paid practically his entire pay for this year.

Cox recently spoke about his legacy in midnight green ahead of the Eagles’ Week 7 game against the Buccaneers. He isn’t a believer in taking anything for granted.
“I say it all the time,” Cox added, “I’m incredibly privileged to be in this position, to be here for ten years.” “And you see a lot of excellent players join an organization for a short period of time and then go.” As a result, I value that greatly and do not take it for granted. Every day, I show up and treat everyone in the building with respect.”
