Before their Week 9 matchup against the Steelers, the Bears sign an ex-Steelers linebacker.

Just five days before the two teams face off on Monday Night Football, the Chicago Bears signed former Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher Cassius Marsh to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Marsh was also designated as one of Chicago’s four practice squad protections, which means he won’t be able to sign with another team until after the Bears-Steelers game on November 8.

The aforementioned maneuverings could be explained by Chicago’s All-Pro edge rusher, Khalil Mack, who has been out with a foot injury. However, the cynical will notice that the Bears also dismissed rookie outside linebacker Sam Kamara, implying that Chicago is seeking to gather information on the Steelers before of their Week 9 matchup.

History of Cassius Marsh with the Steelers

Marsh, 29, joined the Steelers in December 2020 after being signed off the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad following the season-ending ACL tear suffered by outside linebacker Bud Dupree. Marsh was activated by the Steelers just a few days later, and he only played in one game, recording two solo tackles against the Colts on December 27, 2020. He might have played more if he hadn’t been placed on the COVID-19/Reserve list after being identified as a “close contact” of Steelers CB Joe Haden. He didn’t come off the list until January 7, 2021.

The Steelers re-signed the former UCLA product, who was an unrestricted free agent, in March 2021. For the majority of training camp and the preseason, he was the second-team left outside linebacker, but he was cut in the last round of roster cuts on August 31, 2021. In effect, undrafted free agent Jamir Jones won his position over Miami’s 2021 sixth-round pick Quincy Roche, who was cut and later claimed by the New York Giants.
