The ‘Impactful’ Playmaker for the Eagles Gives an Update on Contract Talks.

Darius Slay frequently speaks about mentoring the team’s young cornerbacks. When the Philadelphia Eagles acquired him, Avonte Maddox was one of the first players he made friends with. After just 24 games together, that bond appears to be paying off handsomely.

According to Pro Football Focus, Maddox is the team’s second-best cornerback and the ninth-best at his position in the NFL. In eight games, he has one interception, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and 38 tackles. Slay is only 3.5 points behind the starting nickel corner, who has a 75.1 overall grade.

Do you need further proof? Rewind to last week’s punch-out, which resulted in Slay’s touchdown. Or his interception tip-ball drill against the Raiders. In Week 5, he made a magnificent mid-air swat on a possible score for Robby Anderson. This season, Maddox has been outstanding.

Rodney McLeod lavished admiration on Avonte Maddox. He’s the top cornerback on the #Eagles (by @PFF). According to McLeod: “I gave him his roses; now it’s your turn to offer him some more. He’s been a kid who’s been steadily progressing year after year, and I believe he’s playing at a very high level right now.” #FlyEaglesFly

Rodney McLeod, a safety, stated, “He’s been a player who has been consistently developing year after year.” “And I believe he is currently performing at a very good level. He knows what his position is on this squad, and he’s nailed it, man. You can see how he prepares for practice and how he handles it. At nickel, we put a lot of pressure on him. He’s handled it well and has been in a number of games for us, and he’ll continue to make key plays for us as the season progresses.”

On the Slay scoop and score photo, Avonte Maddox delivered a powerful blow.

Prior to Thursday’s practice, McLeod was throwing “roses” at Maddox when the man of the hour appeared in the back of the media tent. The defensive captain’s words left Maddox beaming and a little humbled.

Maddox says, “I say I’m playing fairly good, [the best]for the four seasons for sure.” Nokia News – Quick Recap
