Bears Re-Sign Familiar Face After Releasing Speedy WR

The Chicago Bears re-signed rookie linebacker Sam Kamara to the practice squad on November 4, just one day after cutting him from the 53-man roster.

Wide receiver Jon’Vea Johnson was cut from the PS in a comparable roster change.

At the start of the season, Kamara was a part of the team’s 16-player practice squad, and he was promoted to the active roster in mid-October. Prior to his release, he appeared in three games for the Bears, recording three total tackles, two QB pressures, and two hurries.

This Summer, Johnson was a bit of a standout at training camp.

Johnson, a 25-year-old wide receiver, was chosen above former first-round picks Javon Wims and Riley Ridley by the Bears, but there just wasn’t enough room on the roster for him.

Johnson had 125 catches for 2,265 yards (18.1 yards per catch) and 25 touchdowns in his undergraduate career. In 2019, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, although he spent the majority of the year on injured reserve. Before being waived on March 19 of this year, he spent the whole 2020 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad. When he arrived in Chicago this summer, he seemed to strike up a friendship with rookie quarterback Justin Fields:

The quick wideout clocked a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash during his pro day, and he didn’t accomplish much in Chicago’s three preseason games this year (three catches on four targets for 19 yards), so his release isn’t surprising.
