Johnson was chosen with the No. 1 overall pick by the Pistons.
The forward was the eighth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, but he has yet to live up to his draft status.
During his six NBA seasons, Johnson averaged 6.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
Johnson would be joining the Lakers for the fourth time in his NBA career, having previously played for the Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Pelicans, and Toronto Raptors.
“Stanley Johnson, No. 1 overall pick,
“NBA insider Marc Stein tweeted that the Lakers’ [G-League] affiliate is resuming his career after being selected No. 8 overall by Detroit in the 2015 NBA Draft.”
During the 2020-21 season, the former highly touted prospect appeared in 61 games (including 13 starts) for the Raptors.
Johnson played 16.5 minutes per game and averaged 4.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
Johnson spent a brief preseason with the Bulls before being released as the team’s roster was finalized.
Johnson is only a 29.8% three-point shooter in his career, so he won’t be much help to the Lakers from long range.

Johnson has a chance to make the NBA roster with the Lakers.
Given the Lakers’ recent injury woes, Johnson has a path back to the NBA if he performs well in the G-League.
The G-League website explains the call-up process in the following way.
“A Call-Up occurs when an NBA team signs a player on an NBA contract who is currently under contract with the NBA G League,” according to the league.
“In each of the last eight seasons, more than 30 NBA G League prospects have received a GATORADE Call-Up.”
Johnson faces a difficult road back to the NBA, but he has the ability to play in the league.
