Coach challenges veteran defender, criticizes slow start

Coach of the Bears challenges veteran defender and criticizes his slow start.

Eddie Goldman hasn’t appeared like himself this season, according to Chris Rumph.

Last year, the veteran Chicago Bears nose tackle opted out due to concerns about COVID-19, and he missed the first three games of the season due to various ailments.

Rumph, Chicago’s defensive line coach, says it was obvious during the first few games that the team’s stalwart run-stopper wasn’t himself, but he’s encouraged by Goldman’s recent performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports, Rumph said of Goldman, “He wasn’t back.”

“Sometimes you hear a name and think it’s enough.

He wasn’t entirely back, as you discover.

After that, other guys got hurt, so those guys were never really able to gel.

He’s starting to feel it and get his legs back under him now that he’s clicking and feeling it.

Going forward, it’ll be exciting.”

Rumph then issued a challenge to Goldman in the future.

Rumph on Goldman: It’s time for him to put together a string of strong performances.

In any case, Goldman is having a bad year.

Pro Football Focus currently ranks him 125th out of 128 interior defensive linemen, and his current overall grade of 38.5 is the lowest of his career.

In Week 9 against the Steelers, the six-year veteran had a QB hurry and a season-high four tackles (one for loss), which Rumph thought was encouraging.

Rumph said, “It was his best game.”

“He appeared to be in charge out there.”

‘Just make your plays,’ I tell those guys all the time.

That is sufficient if you make your plays.

‘Don’t try to mow someone else’s grass.’ I thought he did a good job with his business, and it was nice to see him.”

Then Rumph issued a challenge to Goldman.

“Now it’s time for him to play two games in a row.

I believe his legs are beginning to return to him, and he is gaining a better understanding of the situation.

We’ll see what happens this week, but all signs point to him continuing to improve.”
