Is Omer Yurtseven in need of a few minutes?

Is it really necessary for Omer Yurtseven to have minutes?

Omer Yurtseven, a 23-year-old Turkish big man, was an undrafted prospect who was given an NBA lifeline by the Oklahoma City Thunder before signing with the Miami Heat following a strong showing in the NBA Summer League in 2021-22.

Yurtseven averaged 26 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists over two games for Miami in the California Classic, shooting 54.1 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range.

Obviously, a 6-foot-11 big man with high-level NCAA experience (he attended Georgetown) and the ability to stretch the floor will always be a compelling prospect for a team’s fans.

Yurtseven is no exception.

Yurtseven, on the other hand, is finding opportunities difficult to come by on a team with a defined big-man rotation.

The two veteran centers in the rotation are Bam Adebayo and Dewayne Dedmon.

Coach Erik Spoelstra has limited rotation time to give the Yurtseven developmental minutes.

“The Heat are sticking with Bam Adebayo as their starting center, and Erik Spoelstra has made it clear that he will not pair Adebayo and Dewayne Dedmon.

“From the beginning of training camp, Spoelstra has made it clear that this will primarily be a developmental season for Omer,” Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel wrote in his recent “ASK IRA” segment.

When Yurtseven is given court time, he displays flashes.

It’s in a fan’s nature to overreact when something enjoyable occurs; it’s why we watch sports in the first place – to root for our favorite team and gasp in awe when the seemingly impossible becomes possible.

In early November, Yurtseven gave Heat fans one of those moments when he scored on Los Angeles Lakers All-Star Anthony Davis.

Yurtseven’s only basket of the night, but the fact that it came against Davis was enough to send Miami Twitter into a frenzy.

Yurtseven has averaged under 30 minutes per game for the Heat this season, with five DNPs, but a 4-of-6 performance on opening night, coupled with an impressive bucket against one of the league’s best big men, has Heat fans dreaming of a high-upside…
