Ex-Steelers Nose Tackles Work Out With Raiders, Ravens

Dan McCullers, a former Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle, hasn’t played in the NFL this season, but he’s also not retired.

According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, he was one of a trio of defensive tackles worked out by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday.

Brian Poole, Braxton Hoyett, PJ Johnson, and Daniel McCullers were among the Raiders’ players who went through workouts.

In September 2020, Dan McCullers left the Steelers.

McCullers, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, last played in an NFL game in November 2020, one of three games he played for the Chicago Bears that season.

He began the 2020 season on the Steelers’ practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster, but his contract with the team was terminated on September 22, 2020, when Chicago offered him a spot on the active roster.

In his three games with the Bears, he recorded eight tackles (five solo), proving that he was at least as productive as he was in Pittsburgh.

McCullers played in 73 games (three starts) for the Steelers, recording 41 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, and two passes defensed.

According to Pro Football Reference, his most productive season was in 2016, when he had 17 tackles, a sack, and five quarterback hits.

In 2020, the Steelers acquired better defensive line depth, led by Tyson Alualu, Isaiah Buggs, and 2020 seventh-round draft pick Carlos Davis, and he became expendable.

McCullers first gained national attention while a student at the University of Tennessee, thanks to photos like this one, which highlighted his enormous size, especially when compared to average-sized people.

This season, Tennessee will employ a 1-5-5 defense.

In the spring of 2021, McCullers was offered a minicamp tryout with the Baltimore Ravens, but he was not signed.

Isaiah Mack has been working out with the Ravens.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and his staff worked out nose tackle Isaiah Mack on Tuesday.
