Former Ravens starting linebacker joins Raiders active roster

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Patrick ‘Peanut’ Onwuasor has been signed to the active roster of the Las Vegas Raiders.

In early September, Onwuasor and veteran ex-Seahawk KJ Wright arrived in Las Vegas to help the Raiders’ inexperienced linebacker corps.

He’s already appeared in two games this season, mostly on special teams and with only one defensive snap.

However, Onwuasor’s experience as a core special teamer in Baltimore makes him a reliable option for the Raiders, who used him for over 55% of their special teams snaps in both games.

Onwuasor will almost certainly serve as a one-for-one replacement for Raiders rookie safety Tyree Gillespie, who has played at least 45 percent of the Raiders’ special teams snaps in every game this season.

Gillespie has been placed on injured reserve for the next three days.

‘Peanut’ has a strong special teams background, with two seasons of 80.0 or better grades from Pro Football Focus.

This year, however, he’s struggled, failing to even reach a 50.0 special teams grade in his two games.

Baltimore Career Ups and Downs

Onwuasor arrived in Baltimore as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and quickly established himself on special teams, playing 239 snaps in his rookie season, accounting for 75% of the team’s total special teams snaps.

Onwuasor started at inside linebacker for the Ravens midway through his second season and finished with a career-high 90 total tackles.

His PFF run defense grade of 74.5 was the best of his career, earning him the starting job for the 2018 season.

He improved his game in 2018, earning the best coverage and pass rush grades of his career.

According to PFF, Onwuasor had the second-most regular-season sacks among all linebackers with six.

He also forced two fumbles, a career high, and scored two touchdowns, his only career touchdowns.

However, Onwuasor’s poor performance in 2019 cost him his starting job, and he finished the year with a PFF overall grade of 48.3. He signed with the Jets in 2020, but he only played in one game due to injury.

ILBs on the Ravens are thriving.

Following the season-ending ACL tear suffered by LJ Fort in the preseason, Onwuasor was rumored to be returning to Baltimore, but the Ravens…
