‘Stay away from my guy,’ Patrick Mahomes tells Cardinals’ Kliff Kingsbury.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Kansas City Chiefs almost lost one of their quarterbacks on Tuesday, November 16 when the Arizona Cardinals attempted to sign Shane Buechele from Kansas City’s practice squad to their 53-man roster.

The Chiefs, however, promoted him to the active roster the next day, preventing the Cardinals from signing him.

Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ star quarterback, has a long history with Kliff Kingsbury, the head coach in Arizona.

Kingsbury was Mahomes’ coach at Texas Tech, and the two have remained friends in the NFL, with Mahomes chastising Kingsbury for attempting to steal Buechele from the defending AFC champions.

‘Stay Away From My Guy,’ says the song.

During his press conference on Wednesday, November 17, Mahomes mentioned Buechele’s promotion and briefly mentioned what he told Kingsbury about Buechele.

“[Buechele] works hard every day.

He’s a guy with a lot of energy, and when you’re not playing your first year in that role, you can lose it and become lazy, but he hasn’t shown that,” Mahomes said.

“He’s been in with me and Chad (Henne) every day, getting in and learning as much as he can.”

Kliff (Kingsbury) had to be warned to stay away from my guy.

But he’s someone who works hard and deserves this chance, so I’m happy for him.”

Buechele’s Loyalty Among Chiefs Is Growing

Despite having Mahomes and veteran Chad Henne atop the depth chart, the Chiefs have consistently used one of their practice squad protections on Buechele this season. The Chiefs have not used all four of their practice squad protections in any given week, but Buechele is the lone player on whom they have consistently used one.

Despite a concussion in Week 7, Mahomes has appeared to be in good health the last three weeks.

Henne (finger) was last listed on the injury report in Week 8, but he hasn’t been listed since.

So there’s no reason to keep Buechele around just because he’s injured.

However, there is a case to be made that promoting Buechele ensures that if Mahomes or Henne are injured, Buechele will still be available.
