Young Stars Make an Immediate Impression

The Maine Celtics improved to 5-1 on the season with an 86-79 win over the Capital City Go-Go’s, led by Bruno Fernando and Sam Hauser.

Fernando was acquired by the Boston Celtics during the summer as part of a three-team trade in which Tristan Thompson was traded to the Sacramento Kings.

Fernando also played with the Celtics Summer League team in Las Vegas, impressing with his energy and rim-rolling ability during their run to the finals.

Despite his high-energy performances for Joe Mazzulla’s team, Fernando has yet to crack the Celtics’ rotation or earn significant playing time on an NBA floor through the first 15 games.

Fernando is unlikely to see any playing time outside of garbage time with Al Horford, Robert Williams, and Enes Kanter ahead of him in the team’s center rotation.

As a result, the former Atlanta Hawks backup center has been a dominant force in Maine.

Although Maine’s season is still young and Fernando has only been with the team for a short time, the third-year big man has averaged 8.5 points, 11 rebounds, and a block in 19.8 minutes of action for the Celtics G-League affiliate.

Fernando had a double-double in his most recent game for the Maine Celtics, with 13 points and 14 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

Despite his excellent play in the G-League, Fernando is still forced to play second fiddle to another former Boston Celtics player, Luke Kornet, who is also attempting to return to the NBA.

Sam Hauser, an undrafted sniper, is the team’s leader.

According to G-League Stats, Sam Hauser has been outstanding in his first five games in the G-League, averaging 18.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists.

Hauser has continued to develop a body of work that could be of interest to Celtics head coach Ime Udoka, despite the Celtics’ struggles from beyond the arc early in the season.

Hauser is converting 44.4 percent of his long-range shots and shooting 88.9% from the line on an average of 9 attempts per game.

Hauser missed out on a 504090 season with the Virginia Cavaliers by 0.1 percent from the free-throw line during his final collegiate season…
