After driving a van into a group of pedestrians in Bolton, a man, 27, is detained for attempted murder.

After a black van struck a number of pedestrians early this morning, a man has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder.

In Westhoughton, Bolton, Greater Manchester Police detained a 27-year-old man on suspicion of an attempted murder, and emergency services arrived at the scene at 1.36 am.

The incident, according to police, was “domestic related” and came after an earlier “altercation.”

Police said the outcome of the incident on Market Street could have been “very different,” but no one was hurt.

A black van is seen speeding around a corner during the attack in a dramatic video taken from a nearby building. The van then veers onto the sidewalk and nearly runs over a pedestrian.

The video then shifts to a terrifying new angle, showing the van barreling toward another man head-on.

The van is being pursued by a man wearing a black t-shirt who appears to have come into contact with it.

After again coming close to hitting him, it flips over a trash can and speeds away.

The road is littered with glass fragments in photos taken at the scene.

As the police investigate, the area is still cordoned off and taped off.

‘Police were called at 1.36am this morning to a report of a male driving a van into a crowd of people on Market Street, Westhoughton,’ a GMP spokesman said.

When police arrived on the scene, a 27-year-old man was taken into custody and accused of trying to kill someone.

However, the incident could have had a very different outcome, which is why we have detained the suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, said Detective Inspector Stuart Woodhead of GMP’s Bolton CID. “Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt during this incident, but the outcome could have been very different.

“Following inquiries, we believe this to have been a domestic-related incident, with the suspect believed to have struck a group of people while driving into them after getting into a fight with them,” the statement reads.

“A scene will remain in place on Market Street today while our investigation is ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody for questioning.”

Anyone with information or who saw this incident is asked to call the police at (0161) 85 65757 and reference log number 235 from August 6, 2022.

A different option is to call Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
