Amazon employees walk out in droves over a 35 pence pay increase as Jeff Bezos, 58, swans around London.

While their billionaire boss cruises around London with his girlfriend, Amazon employees across the UK have walked out in protest over pay.

After learning that their starting hourly rate would only increase by a pitiful 35p to £11.45 from £11.10, over 700 employees in Tilbury, Essex, have quit their jobs.

Additionally, protests have been held by workers in Rugeley, Staffordshire; Coventry; and Bristol.

However, the biggest incident occurred in Essex, where video of staff members who sat in the canteen and declined to work went viral on social media.

A Tilbury employee claimed that the warehouse staff had been concerned about their pay for some time due to rising household expenses and because they had been anticipating a “substantial increase” of at least £1 per hour.

“We made sure the nation was connected during the pandemic and were there for them.

We were there and made sure the nation was operating,’ he said, mentioning Amazon as one of the platforms used to distribute Covid tests to people.

“To get 35p for all this is insulting.”

It’s almost like getting a pay cut because it’s only about 3% compared to the rapidly rising inflation.

Just thinking about my high energy costs and how 35p won’t get me very far makes me anxious and stressed.

It happened at the same time that Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon and a man estimated to be worth $137 billion, was seen dining out lavishly in London with his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez.

Bezos, 58, and Miss Sanchez, 52, have been on a break that has included a private tour of Buckingham Palace and dinner at The Twenty Two restaurant where Tom Cruise also dined. They were last seen this week at the hip Ham Yard Hotel in Soho.

The couple was also captured strolling through Mayfair while Mr. Bezos was sporting a pair of white jeans worth £600 and Miss Sanchez was toting a pink crocodile Hermes Birkin bag, which is valued at about £87,000 in total.

Union leaders have demanded a £2 increase per hour for Amazon employees as the effects of rising inflation and the squeeze on living expenses persist.

The US retail and technology juggernaut’s UK sales last year exceeded £23 billion.

One of the world’s most successful companies is Amazon, according to GMB regional organizer Steve Garlick.

The very least they can do is provide decent pay with rising living expenses.

‘Amazon still refuses to cooperate with labor unions to provide better working conditions and equitable pay,’ reads a recent statement.
