Jamie Dornan describes being quarantined in Australia while his father died of cancer.

Jamie Dornan has spoken about being imprisoned in quarantine in Australia while his father died in Belfast, over 10,000 miles away.

The actor, 39, was quarantined in a hotel ahead of filming The Tourist in Australia, and he had four days left on his quarantine when he learned that his father Jim had died of coronavirus.

However, due to strict travel and quarantine restrictions, Jamie was unable to return to his native Northern Ireland to be with his family during this heartbreaking time, describing 2021 as the “worst” and “hardest” year of his life.

Jim, a world-famous obstetrician, died in March at the age of 73 after contracting the virus while in the hospital for a routine knee operation.

Jamie, who had not seen his father in 18 months due to lockdown and filming, explained how he understood the trauma that so many people had experienced as a result of the global pandemic as he dealt with his own tragic loss.

‘For a variety of reasons and for a variety of people, it’s been a brutal time,’ he told The Sun.

We’re all just trying to get through it and make it to the other side — with our heads intact.’

The leading man has recently received praise for his performance in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, which depicts one family’s experience during Northern Ireland’s Troubles.

And Jim, a well-known obstetrician and gynecologist in Belfast who even had a photo of Kenneth at home, was proud of his son’s role in the film but sadly is no longer alive to see it.

With the tragic loss of his father, the 50 Shades Of Grey actor admitted that 2021 had been “the worst year… and the hardest” of his life, adding, “I’ve been subjected to a lot of pain and loss, early on in my life and now.”

The early loss he was referring to was the death of his mother Lorna from pancreatic cancer when he was only 16 years old, with Jim guiding him through the ordeal by telling his son, “Don’t let this be the thing that defines you.”

Jamie plays Pa, a character who works in England and considers relocating his family there amid the conflicts, in his new film Belfast, set in the 1960s.

Jamie also admitted that the storyline was very personal to him because being away from his young daughters for such a long time hurts him.

Dulcie and Dulcie are the actor’s daughters.
