The Arizona Diamondbacks mourn the passing of Nicole Hazen, Mike Hazen’s wife, who had brain cancer.

GM Mike Hazen’s wife Nicole Hazen passed away on Thursday, the Diamondbacks reported. She was 45 years old.

According to a statement from Hazen’s family that the team was given access to, he passed away from the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma.

In 2020, the illness was identified in her.

The family praised Nicole for the fierce and devoted way she lived her life and loved her family.

As a mother, wife, and educator who promoted goodness, she dedicated every day of her life to serving others.

The love, support, and unplanned acts of kindness that have been shown to us over the past two years and four months are something for which our family will always be grateful.

Without the support and kindness of our community, we would not have been able to travel down this road alongside her.

“While glioblastoma gradually reduced her ability to speak, walk, talk, and lead, it never affected her ability to love her children, family, and friends.”

The torch of her unwavering compassion for everyone will be carried forward starting today even though we are lost without her.

When Nicole was battling the illness, Hazen, who joined the team in 2016, took a “physical leave of absence” from his job in 2021 to spend more time with his family.

According to AZ Central, at the time he claimed his wife was “doing OK” and “grinding along” as she battled the illness and that it was a choice he had given some thought to.

When asked about the choice at the time, D-backs CEO Derrick Hall said, “He needs his time with his boys right now.”

He needs time with Nicole, I think.
